“Smack Dab in the Middle” was written by Charles E. Calhoun, a pseudonym used by songwriter Jesse Stone. The best known version is by Ray Charles from 1964. I know the cover by Ry Cooder from his 1976 album Chicken Skin Music and videos from his 1977 tour. Cooder is not a great singer but the arrangement is an adventurous fusion of Tex-Mex and R&B featuring the great accordionist Flaco Jimenez.
