I loved ‘Hundreds of Beavers’

‘Hundreds of Beavers’ is a hilarious independent film comedy. It’s in black and white and was made for $150,00 with no famous actors. The animal characters are obviously people in costumes and there is hardly any dialogue.

It’s very original but was clearly influenced by silent comedies, video games and cartoons. The main character experiences events that should kill him but bounces right back.

The plot especially reminded me of Buster Keaton’s slient films – the conflict between the suitor and his beloved’s father and his incompetence until his stunning overwhelming success.

It was just released on Blu-ray.

Two more pseudo-realistc Halloween films

After watching Late Night with the Devil, which is supposed to be a TV broadcast, I found two more Halloween-based films.

The WNUF Halloween Special is a fake TV broadcast. One of the highlights is the endless supply of fake UHF commercials. It’s an enjoyable horror film.

Ghostwatch was actually broadcast on the BBC in 1992. They used real broadcasters to portray themselves. It’s a very clever horror film.

I had never heard of either until looking for films similar to Late Night with the Devil. I’m glad I found them.

Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil (2023) is an outstanding Australian horror film. It was directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes who also directed 100 Bloody Acres which I have posted about.

It is about a 1977 Halloween episode of an American late night talk show where things go awry and get continually worse. It was smart of the directors to show the talk show parts in 4×3 ration and garish color. There are behind the scenes parts in widescreen and black and white which make them clearly different from the talk show. It’s funny as well as scary and very original.
