Breaking news: A federal judge found that the IRS violated federal law “approximately 42,695 times” when it shared confidential taxpayer addresses with immigration enforcement officials last summer.

DOGE attack on IRS data
SCOOP: DOGE is hosting a “hackathon” in DC next week with the goal of building one “mega API” for accessing all IRS data. Palantir has been brought up as a potential partner. http://www.wired.com/story/doge-h…

A while back I mentioned I helped to build a government AI tool. DOGE "deleted" (fired) my whole org (@alt18f.bsky.social) and took the tool to become their "AI-first strategy."But what is the strategy? What are they actually planning to do?I’m trying to piece it together. Here’s what I think 🧵

Postscript: I want to address this questionDidn't DOGE already steal all this data? IRS and SSA data? So am I just describing something that's already happened? No.It's true that DOGE has seized access to a bunch of data, and they *may have* copied it, although that's mostly unconfirmed.

Republicans force reduced IRS funding so they can protect rich people and tax cheaters
IRS funding is working. IRS is recovering more money than they are spending. Republicans are not serious about saving government money since they won’t support IRS funding.
As former IRS commissioner John Koskinen has said: “Underfunding the agency is just a tax cut for tax cheats.” People who actually care about the deficit, much less a government that provides valuable services and protections for regular people, would never do this.

An IRS once again cut to the bone won’t have the resources to chase after the billions in taxes owed by the nation’s economic elite. That is the point, and everyone should care.

AP: The IRS announced Thursday that it has collected $1 billion in back taxes from high-wealth tax cheats — a milestone meant to showcase how the agency is making use of the money it received as part of the Biden administration’s signature law in 2022https://t.co/gkBs5SIiNn

It was the first bill they introduced, they tried again in Limit, Save, Grow, and then they demanded it in the budget deal as a condition for not forcing the government to default. https://t.co/ASrvQSHdZm
GOP scare tactics about IRS funding
The IRS has fallen on hard times because of the Republican unwillingness to fund it. Then the public complains about bad service which just plays into the GOP narrative.
The new funding plan passed entirely by Democrats has come under attack with massive lies and scare tactics by Republicans.
My colleague @MariannaReports has a good report about how the GOP falsehood of "87,000 armed IRS agents" in Biden's bill is gaining traction despite it being totally wrong. …. https://t.co/WRkSqdMmYg

You are being lied to. There's no army of 87,000 new IRS agents. It's made up.
— Rep. Gerry Connolly (@GerryConnolly) August 10, 2022
The GOP hollowed out the IRS & slashed its budgets. Rich tax cheats run wild, meanwhile you can't even get someone from the IRS on the phone.
We are restoring the agency so it actually works for you.
"What if I told you the IRS.. the tax guys.. are coming to hunt you down? To shoot you & maybe even kill you?"

Gee, you'd think the leaders of these red states that get more back from the federal government than they pay in taxes—hello Iowa!—would be all for more IRS agents:) In fact, the focus is on high net-worth individuals who aren't paying enough in taxes. https://t.co/nXj5M0lQRM

The IRS does not plan to use the nearly $80 billion it's set to receive in funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to hire 87,000 new agents in order to target middle class Americans, a Treasury Department official told @ABC News and documents verify. https://t.co/xeAndw3GzC
