“Heartbreak Hotel” was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1956.
Category: Music covers
Covers: All Shook Up
“All Shook Up” is best known as a 1957 Elvis Presley record but it was actually recorded first by David Hess in 1956. It was written by Otis Blackwell who also recorded it.
Covers: Leave My Kitten Alone
Reading about the Beatles version of “Mr. Moonlight” leads to “Leave My Kitten Alone”, another cover recorded at the same time but not released until the 1990s. The Beatles version also figures prominently in Bobbie Ann Mason’s novel In Country.
The original version from 1959 was by Little Willie John.
Covers: An American Dream
“An American Dream” was written by Rodney Crowell and released by him in 1978. A more popular version was released by the Dirt Band in 1979.
Covers: Secret Agent Man
“Secret Agent Man” was the theme to a TV show and a popular song released by Johnny Rivers in 1966. It began as a demo called “Danger Man” by co-author P. F. Sloan before the name of the show was changed. The first released version of “Secret Agent Man” was by the Challengers.
Covers: Let It Go
Covers: Respect
“Respect” is a great 1965 Otis Redding record that became an even greater cover when Aretha Franklin recorded it in 1967. I’ve been watching Respect, the 2021 film based on her life which has Jennifer Hudson playing Franklin. There aren’t a lot of other covers. Who could top these two versions?
Covers: What a Wonderful World
Music can make people feel better during hard times. I had to post this:
“What a Wonderful World” was first recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1967.
Covers: Everlasting Love
“Everlasting Love” was recently in the excellent 2021 film Belfast. The original hit version was by Robert Knight in 1967. TThe 1974 cover by Carl Carlton did even better on the charts.
