Trump lost the popular vote by a bigger margin in 2020 but he got approximately 74 million votes compared to 63 million in 2016. I don't think he got more conservative, he got more overtly white nationalist which appeals to his large cult.

I would never say that everyone who voted for Trump is a white nationalist but Trump is a bigot and they accepted that.
