TimeOut on the 50 Greatest Italian Movies

I think the TimeOut list is excellent. I’ve seen 22 of them. They have Amarcord at 30. It’s my favorite Fellini film and I would put it near the top. I am glad they included Giallo and horror films such as Deep Red and The Beyond. Of the recent films, I strongly recommend The Great Beauty.

Tweet on Francois Truffaut

Truffaut’s “Jules and Jim” is one of the best films I know. I also admire “The 400 Blows”, “Shoot the Piano Player”, and “The Wild Child”. ”The Bride Wore Black” is very underrated. I am not a fan of “Mississippi Mermaid” and “Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me” though maybe I would like them better than I did in the 1970s.

Tweets on the great film director Yasujiro Ozu

American audiences were not aware of him until Tokyo Story (1953) was released here in 1972. It’s the best of his films that I have seen and is regarded by critics as his finest too but there are many other good films he directed.

Tokyo Story and other Ozu films are available on discs from the Criterion Collection.
