I bet DeSantis is counting on the right-wing Supreme Court to let his map stand, at least for 2022 elections. He is evil but I think he’s got a good chance to be our next president. He has terrible policies like Trump but with less personal baggage and is not as obsessed with 2020.

Update on gerrymandering in New York
Early read on NY lower court judge blocking Dems’ 22D-4R gerrymander: ruling likely to be stayed on appeal, so Dems believe map will remain in place, at least for 2022.
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 31, 2022
Huge stakes here, as a “neutral” map could cost Dems 3-4 seats and erase their nationwide remap gains. pic.twitter.com/qeAjHeWZ5z
A judge has ordered New York's Democrat-controlled Legislature to redraw the state's congressional and legislative districts after finding they were unconstitutional and gerrymandered to benefit Democrats. Legislative leaders plan to appeal.https://t.co/xzeMuLnLiI

Probably means you can kiss the Dem redistricting advantage goodbye.
— Josh Kraushaar (@HotlineJosh) March 31, 2022
To their credit, Dem-appointed judges acting on principle > partisan politics. First Maryland, now New York. Undoing some of the most egregious gerrymanders of the cycle.

Update on gerrymandering in Louisiana
Louisiana becomes the 40th state to complete congressional redistricting (if you count Ohio's GOP map), with GOP legislators overriding Gov. Edwards (D) veto to enact a 5R-1D map maintaining just one Black majority seat. Lawsuit filed, but after Alabama, it's a long shot. https://t.co/2v7iVZATei
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 30, 2022
Fun fact: This is likely only the third successful veto override in Louisiana history! https://t.co/wXaHnOE1FN
— Nathaniel Rakich (@baseballot) March 30, 2022
It is shameful that the first vote overriding a Louisiana governor’s veto in a generation—which happened just today—was to deny black Louisianans fair representation in Congress.

Update on gerrymandering in Florida
DeSantis is so extreme he wouldn’t even accept a map approved by a Republican-majority legislature.
NEW: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoes new congressional map approved by the Republican-controlled legislature, setting up a showdown with his own party https://t.co/JAKQ9Yk526
— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) March 29, 2022
The Legislature's map preserved a majority-Black district in north FL. The district was drawn to protect Black voters' ability to elect candidates of their choice. DeSantis opposes the district, saying it was improperly drawn using race as the main factor. https://t.co/sncrVMIn4d

Update on gerrymandering in Maryland
An aside to this @baseballot piece: Judged by efficiency gap or extra partisan seats, Maryland has one of the **fairest** congressional maps in the nation. https://t.co/ln9GxYq6rk

New: a Maryland court has struck down Democrats' 7D-1C-0R map as an illegal partisan gerrymander, the first such state-level victory in the GOP's direction. If replaced w/ a neutral map, this could end up costing Dems 1-2 seats. pic.twitter.com/ceMsDlJfzB

New: In the final months of a decades-long political career, Ohio's GOP chief justice is standing firm as the last wall blocking her party from gerrymandering. Republicans are furious. Some want her impeached, even though she's set to leave the court soon https://t.co/1tK24M55gp

— David Pepper (@DavidPepper) March 26, 2022
I'm on a flight, which gives me an opportunity to do something I've wanted to do for a while: review just how lawless the Ohio GOP behavior has become, and the risk it poses to the rule of law in Ohio long-term.
1/
I'm seeing a lot of news outlets depict Ohio's GOP-enacted map as giving Rs an advantage in at least 10 of 15 seats, but that understates the gerrymander.
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 29, 2022
There are 10 solid R seats, two solid D seats and three competitive seats. There's a real chance of a 13R-2D rout in 2022.

Needless to say, the Supreme Court's rather selective application of the Purcell principle (no last-minute changes to election rules) in AL vs. WI won't do anything to diminish perceptions it's become a partisan body.
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 23, 2022
So much for overturning redistricting plans so close to an election. The full hypocrisy of the conservative majority of the Supreme Court on display. This is a willful exercise of political power by the Court, not judges calling balls and strikes https://t.co/am8mR3bLaI

Six weeks ago, in early February, SCOTUS stayed a ruling ordering Alabama to redraw its congressional map because it was too close to the election

Now, in late March, it's ordering Wisconsin to redraw its legislative maps https://t.co/pCwGbugAt0

— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 23, 2022
This is an absolutely shocking decision. The maps were adopted by a Republican justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. This appeal was considered a Hail Mary, and it prevailed. I am stunned by this ruling. https://t.co/i5r4D0eqcj

Update on gerrymandering in Ohio (3/21/22)
OHIO: I'm told there's a strong likelihood plaintiffs will file a new lawsuit against the GOP's latest congressional map before the end of the day, per the OH Supreme Court's order Friday.
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 21, 2022
Republicans are hoping courts will say the clock has run out on a challenge. We'll see.
Wow: on a seeming technicality, the OH Supreme Court leaves open the possibility for the latest GOP congressional gerrymander to be used for this November’s election. A surprise and a setback for Democrats. https://t.co/Xb0NfnsY5K
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 18, 2022
Of the five remaining states, Ohio has by far the most potential to alter the national picture. If the OH Supreme Court invalidates the GOP plan and orders a 8-7 Trump plan (example, left), it could hand Dems 2-3 more seats vs. the current 12R-4D gerrymander (right). pic.twitter.com/vtgjiFwRlB
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 8, 2022
New: Ohio's Republicans propose a new 10R-2D-3C map that could still result in a 13R-2D split in a favorable GOP year. To my eye, this isn't really any less of a gerrymander than the first map the OH Supreme Court struck down. https://t.co/b9yb8UjKH7
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) March 1, 2022
Given that this map isn't much fairer than the one that was ruled illegal in Jan., the OH Supreme Court may strike down this map too. But in the meantime, OSU's Steve Huefner tells me he believes this map is in effect until the court says otherwise. https://t.co/QgCIcO80jz
