“YYZ” is a Rush song from 1981. I don’t know much about them but liked the tweet.
Category: Music covers
Covers: Stand By Your Man
I am posting about “Stand By Your Man” because a bad version of it by Minnie Driver is in the James Bond film GoldenEye. The original version was by Tammy Wynette from 1968. I like the cover by Lyle Lovett (1989) which sounds like a warning.
Covers: The Big Light
“The Big Light” is an Elvis Costello song from King of America (1986). Johnny Cash covered it in 1987.
Covers: America (Simon & Garfunkel song)
“America” was a Simon and Garfunkel song on their 1968 album Bookends. Yes drastically rearranged it in 1970.
Covers: I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better
“I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better” is a great 1965 Byrds song written by Gene Clark. Tom Petty was one of the people who covered it.
Covers: Jamaica Say You Will
Los Lobos recently covered this Jackson Browne song. The first version of “Jamaica Say You Will” was by the Byrds in 1971 while Browne’s own version was released in 1972.
Covers: Pancho and Lefty
The tweet about Emmylou Harris prompted me to write this post. “Pancho and Lefty” (1972) is a song by Townes Van Zandt. The cover by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard (1983) is the best-known version.
Covers: Substitute
“Substitute” is a great Who single from 1966. It reached #5 in the UK but didn’t do anything in the US. It’s really funny but I guess our sense of humor is different. It’s on the fine compilation Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy from 1971 which has other excellent Who singles that were successful in the UK but failed here. The Ramones covered it. Here‘s a list of covers from the great Second Hand Songs site.
Covers: Music to Watch Girls By
“Music to Watch Girls By” started life as the music for a Diet Pepsi commercial. The Bon Crewe Generation made it into a hit single with their recording in 1966. Andy Williams did a vocal version.
Covers: Thirteen
“Thirteen” is a 1972 song by the great band Big Star. They certainly were not appreciated in their time.
