Elton John’s “Rocket Man” (1972) is in the news because William Shatner, who covered it, went into space this week.
Category: Music covers
Covers: Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen song)
“Hallelujah” was written and recorded by Leonard Cohen who released it in 1984. There are many covers including versions by John Cale and Jeff Buckley and it was in the film “Shrek”.
Covers: 1-2-3 (Len Barry song)
I remember the Len Barry 1965 original version of “1-2-3” . I had no idea that Roy Wood have covered it until yesterday.
Covers: Midnight Train to Georgia
A new cover of “Midnight Train to Georgia” reminded me of this fine song by Glady Knight and the Pips.
Covers: Clay Pigeons
I had never heard of Blaze Foley until I read this Instagram post yesterday.
Covers: Come Softly to Me
“Come Softly to Me” was hit for the Fleetwoods in 1959. I thought about it yesterday when a version by Percy Sledge was playing on a jukebox in the background in the film Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets.
Shel Silverstein (born 9/25/30)
Shel Silverstein is best known as a songwriter and book author. My favorite version of one of his songs is “Three Legged Man” performed by Steve Goodman. I was fortunate enough to see Goodman sing it in person.
I have included it below with other artists performing Silverstein songs.
Covers: Nick of Time
Bonnie Raitt’s “Nick of Time” was released as a single in 1990. She just posted about a new cover by Lake Street Dive. More about the Raitt recording is here.
Covers: Ripple
“Ripple”, a 1970 Grateful Dead song, was covered by Playing for Change in 2015.
Great tweet (as always) from The Paranoid Style:
Watch 15 different incarnations of Grateful Dead perform ‘Ripple’ over 56 years
Music Covers: Peace Train
“Peace Train” (1971) by Cat Stevens has just been covered by several musicians (including him) as part of Playing for Change.
