“Love Hurts” was originally recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1960. It was never on one of their singles. It has been successful as a single for other artists. There is a great duet by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris that was released in 1974. Probably the best known version is the 1975 recording by Nazareth.

This 1972 Little Feat song was covered by Van Dyke Parks and Robert Palmer.

There are several songs with this name. This post is about “Let The Good Times Roll” that was a hit for Shirley and Lee in 1956. Among the covers is one by Caesar and Cleo who later became Sonny and Cher. The original version was used in a Walmart TV commercial in 2018.

“Farther Along” is a gospel song that was published in 1911.

Well known covers from the rock era include the Flying Burrito Brothers (1970) and the Byrds (1971). There are other versions I have linked to below.

Ike Turner rewrote it as “Father Alone” and recorded it in 1974

The Beatles were obviously very fond of Larry Williams. They covered three of his songs including “Dizzy Miss Lizzy”. The original is from 1958 and the Beatles version is from 1965. John Lennon also played it in Toronto in 1969.

Williams recorded for Specialty like Little Richard. His records are similar to Little Richard’s; they are loud and fast featuring the piano with more conventional vocals. “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” was not a big hit and only reached 69 on the Billboard chart.

If you are not familiar with him, I encourage you to listen to some of his recordings which are among the best of the original R&B/Rock and Roll of the 1950s. He is one of only five artists I can think of who was covered by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Bahamian Joseph Spence recorded “Out On The Rolling Sea” in the 1960s and 1970s. Van Dyke Parks released a very syncopated elaborate version as a single in 1970.

I was watching a show on the Doobie Brothers today which included their version of “Jesus Is Just Alright”. Their 1972 version closely tracks the Byrds version from 1969. I was not aware until I prepared this post that the original version was by the Art Reynolds Singers from 1966.

Blind Willie McTell recorded his song “Statesboro Blues” in 1928. His version is acoustic. The best known modern version is by the Allman Brothers (1971) which was based on Taj Mahal’s 1968 electric version.

“Release Me” has been successful as an R&B, country and pop song. The best known versions are by Esther Phillips (1962) and Englebert Humperdinck (1967). I am partial to the country version by Lyle Lovett/k.d. lang (2012) on the album with the same name.
