Ricky Jay

Ricky Jay was a magician, author, and actor.

I first knew his work through his book Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women that is about all kinds of strange people.

Good news: If you would like to watch Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants on YouTube I have done a painstaking 4k upscale of this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0gW…

Post from Van Dyke Parks

I am watching this film now and didn’t know he was in it.

There is also a DVD about him and his mentors. I’ve been watching it.

Uncle Meat – The Mothers of Invention (1969)

Uncle Meat by the Mothers of Invention was released in 1969. Compared to their earlier albums, it was much more focused on music with little focus on social issues. This post includes information on the artist who did the cover and how you can get a giclée print based on it. I have also included links to several songs. “The Air” shows the influence of doo-wop which was prominent in early Mothers records. “King Kong” is more representative of the album. I saw one of their concerts in 1969 and it was largely instrumental.

Meat Light is an expanded version.

Cal Schenkel has a web site where you can purchase a giclée print based on his Uncle Meat cover. The picture is of my copy of the print.

Harry Nilsson

One of my favorite Nilsson songs:

Covers: Heroes and Villains

“Heroes and Villains” is my favorite Beach Boys song and was the follow up single to “Good Vibrations in 1967. The song’s lyricist, Van Dyke Parks, performed it live 2010. The song’s other author, Brian Wilson has also performed it.

Nashville Skyline is 50

Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline was released on April 9, 1969. It continued the country leanings of the last two songs on his prior album John Wesley Harding. It was a lot different than the albums he had produced just a few years earlier of image-laden organ-drenched pounding rock.

This was a straight country album and didn’t seem very ambitious. It was peaceful during a really turbulent time. The best songs have held up well – I prefer “I Threw It All Away” and “To Be Alone With You” to the hit “Lay Lady Lay”.

Happy Pi Day!

Creature from the Black Lagoon

The film was released 65 years ago today. Try to see it in 3D on Blu-ray or at events like Blobfest. I got to meet Ricou Browning at Blobfest several years ago – he played the creature when he was underwater.

National Pizza Day

This is a very important holiday. The best pizza I have ever had was from Two Boots which has multiple locations although the one here in Baltimore is gone.
