The Orioles farm system is ranked #11

There was a several-year period when the Orioles farm system was ranked #1. Then they brought the top prospects up to the majors and got later first-round picks. The farm system rnak declined.

This year, between 21 draftees signed and 16 players acquired in deadline trades, the system rebounded to #11. The Orioles just brought two of their top prospects up to the majors – Samuel Basallo and Dylan Beavers.

Videos of Thomas Boswell’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame

The great writer Thomas Boswell was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend.

Thomas Boswell’s speech in Cooperstown: ‘Thanks, baseball’ (Text of the speech)

I saw Boswell speak and sign books at Politics and Prose in Washington in 1989 when his book The Heart of the Order was released. He asked people if they were Orioles or Senators fans and would write an appropriate inscription – see mine below.

As I recall a woman said the book was for her nephew, a New York Mets fan. Boswell said something like “What do you want me to say? Good luck to obnoxious, arrogant Mets?”

ESPN on the top 10 Orioles prospects

This list was made after the 2025 draft. The Orioles had seven early picks and a record money allotment and got good reviews for their selections.

I think Basallo will join the major league roster in August or September. I think Beavers will get a promotion too, maybe sooner depending on who the Orioles trade.

The MLB draft starts today. Here are all prior Orioles first round picks

The Orioles have four early picks – 19, 30, 31 and 37. I hope they draft some college pitchers instead of the usual position players.

The Orioles 1999 draft was a real disaster. They had seven of the first 50 picks and only got one good player out of them – Brian Roberts. Here’s a column by Roch Kubatko on that draft.
