DOJ, during the same era that it wrote that a sitting President cannot be indicted (something I disagree with and that has protected Trump thus far), also wrote an opinion saying a sitting President cannot pardon himself. Link below https://t.co/5ADWO6hFqR

NYT reporting that Trump is considering pardoning himself. As I wrote here, if he does that, he’s basically guaranteeing he’ll be prosecuted https://t.co/WVu2yBkhnr

Reminder: Presidential pardons apply only to federal law and provide no protection against state crimes. They would not apply to charges that could be brought by prosecutors in Manhattan investigating the Trump Organization's finances. https://t.co/m637BgfJua

One of the legal questions over a self-pardon involves the fact that neither the president, nor members of his family, have been charged by federal prosecutors with a crime.

It’s no surprise that Trump wants to pardon himself, and his complicity in yesterday’s act of domestic terrorism give him more incentive to try.

A self-pardon creates a dangerous precedent of a president who is above the law.
Trump should be removed before he pardons himself. https://t.co/dAUkk3Akq0
Trump floating the idea of pardoning himself does raise the stakes of Congress impeaching and removing him now. Otherwise a president could simply wait until the final weeks of term, break laws in an effort to subvert election, foment insurrection, and pardon self if that fails.
