It’s a great film. Orson Welles was only 25 when he made it. I was a teenager when I saw it and I was shocked. I only knew Welles as this fat guy doing Paul Masson commercials.

Another strange Nicholas Cage film
Cage stars in Willy’s Wonderland which features killer animatronics. It’s one of the strangest films I have ever seen. Cage also appeared in two other unusual horror films recently – Mandy and Color Out of Space. I admire Cage for acting in such unique films. They’re not classics but they’re all fun to watch because they are so different from most films.
100 Greatest Korean Films selected by film critics
Korea has produced many great films recently. I am glad that this was recognized when the Academy Award for Best Picture went to Parasite. I have seen some of them and recommend all the films by Bong Joon-ho. I also suggest Train to Busan, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, New World, Attack the Gas Station!, and A Taxi Driver. Except for Gas Station, they’re on Blu-ray discs. Gas station is on DVD.

The Magnificent Ambersons – Is there a lost print?
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) was Orson Welles’s second film following his great Citizen Kane (1941). RKO cut it and tacked on a happy ending while Welles was out of the country. There have always been rumors of a full print but it has never been found. It would be great if this effort locates it. The film in its current form is still outstanding and would make my top ten list for American films. Criterion released it on Blu-ray and DVD. TCM also shows it occasionally.
This is a web site about the film and its history.
A Night in Casablanca
I agree with this assessment. A Night in Casablanca was much better than I expected it to be. It’s not as good as the five Paramount films or A Night at the Opera but it’s clearly preferable to At The Circus, Go West or The Big Store. It was recently released on Blu-ray.
The Band Box Theatre in Philadelphia
The long-gone Band Box Theatre showed great foreign films by directors like Bunuel and Fellini. I saw some great films there when I was in high school. I definitely recall seeing Nazarin and The Exterminating Angel there. Nazarin has never been released on a US Blu-ray or DVD. I most recently saw it a few years ago at the American Film Institute. The Exterminating Angel has been released on Blu-ray and DVD by the Criterion Collection.
Interview with the directors of ‘Tina’ in Vanity Fair
This is an excellent interview with the directors of the new documentary ‘TIna’ on Tina Turner. Both of them cite “River Deep – Mountain High” as their favorite recording of hers. It’s a great 1966 record produced by Phil Spector but It was not a hit.
Steve McQueen – Drive-By Truckers
Steve McQueen would have been 91 today. The Drive-By Truckers saluted him with this 1998 song. I have also attached a video from a show I saw of theirs in 2009. This is far from their most mature work but it’s loud and fun.

The 3-D Film Archive has restored old 3-D movies. They use Kickstarter to fund some of the restorations. Their site has lots of good information on old 3-D films and the history of 3-D.
20 Best Film Noirs list from the Independent
Writer Graeme Ross prepared this list. I’ve seen 19 of the 20. (I haven’t seen Detour.) Most are available on disc or shown on TCM. I agree with many of his picks but I would put them in a different order. Out of the Past is #1 for me followed by Criss Cross. The Big Sleep is a great film. I saw it recently and was impressed by how well written the script is.
I’m glad he included The Big Heat and The Big Combo. I would rank them both higher than he does.
