Don Everly
Don Everly, the older of the Everly Brothers duo, died on August 21, 2021. The Everly Brothers had hits from the late 1950s into the 1960s and were very influential. Their harmonies are as good as they get.
I am going to post one of their later songs “Gone, Gone, Gone” from 1964 which was covered by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss in 2007. It was the first song on the CD of the Everly Brothers 1983 Reunion concert.
Covers: Please Mr. Postman
“Please Mr. Postman” was a 1961 hit for the Marvelettes. It was Motown’s first #1 Billboard pop single. This great record was covered in a fine version by the Beatles in 1963. It’s one of the best Beatles covers (along with “Money). It was also popular in a 1974 cover by the Carpenters.
Covers: Piece of My Heart
“Piece of My Heart” was recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967. The cover by Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin on vocals from 1968 was much more popular. It was used in the film Gunpowder Milkshake which prompted me to post this.

I thought of this 1965 Bob Dylan song when the film Gunpowder Milkshake used a version by the Animals that I had never heard.

Country singer-songwriter Tom T. Hall died yesterday. “Harper Valley P.T.A” was a big hit for Jeannie C. Riley. The biggest hit of his I recall is “I Love”. The Drive-by Truckers covered
Covers: Right Place, Wrong Time
“Right Place, Wrong Time” is a Dr. John song from 1973. I thought about it last night because there is a cover by the Jon Spencer Blues explosion in the slasher film Scream 2.
Covers: I Think I Love You
“I Think I Love You” was a hit for the Partridge Family in 1970. I thought of it last night when I watched the slasher film Scream 2. One of the characters sings it and there is also a real cover in the end credits. It’s a lot different than the original!
