I think Mayo will be a big star. I hope the Orioles keep him and give him a chance.

Robert Andino’s walk-off hit was 12 years ago today

On September 28, 2011 Orioles player Robert Andino got a hit off Red Sox closer Jon Papelbon which won the game and prevented the Red Sox from making the playoffs. I linked to a tweet with video.

That winter, I went to the Orioles FanFest and got Andino’s autograph. After that, I heard one fan tell another “I tried to get him to sign it ‘Suck it Pap’ but he wouldn’t”.

Unassisted triple plays – the rarest event in baseball

The unassisted triple play is the rarest event in baseball. There have only been 15 of them. The last one was in 2009.

Terrible New York Times article on John Angelos

Tyler Kepner, an excellent writer, should know better.

I posted comments on Twitter. Like mine, most of the comments on the article were negative. Here are my thoughts in more detail.

  1. The Orioles were the fourth most profitable MLB team in 2022. Angelos is already making lots of money and can spend more on players. I don’t expect them to keep both Rutschman and Henderson. We’ve already seen this when the Orioles traded Manny Machado instead of paying him what he was worth. The window for winning is about four more years.

2. Angelos says that the way Kevin Brown’s absence from the team was handled was wrong and it won’t happen again. He’s the boss. He could have stepped in and stopped it while it was happening. He had many days to do this and chose not to.

3. Angelos is making unreasonable requests and we don’t know why. The state offered both the Orioles and Ravens $600 million for stadium improvements if they signed a long-term lease extension. The Ravens did and the Orioles haven’t so far. The lease runs out on 12/31/23. It is unlikely that the team would be moved but remember we in Baltimore worry about this since the Colts left in 1984.

You probably can’t read this article unless you are a Baltimore Sun subscriber but the main points are:

Angelos wanted the rights to build on three parking lots which are also used by the Ravens.

Angelos wanted $300 million more in addition to the $600 million.

4. I like Angelos’s goal of building an entire entertainment district but there isn’t enough room near the stadium. I worry that ultimately, they will build a stadium in the suburbs where they could get the land.

5. The Times article says:

But Angelos mentioned several other possibilities: an elementary school located in the warehouse, a health and wellness clinic, internship and mentorship programs for local youth.

These are fine ideas but I don’t see how they make money for the Orioles which I assume is his main goal. I think this is just to get support from the community.

The Orioles are having a great season on the field and it’s a shame to have Angelos distract from it.

Eddie Murray stole home – 8/15/79

The 1979 season was my favorite Baltimore Orioles season since I moved here in 1976. I saw 45 games including two ALCS games and four World Series games.

I remember this game well. The White Sox had a rookie pitcher working in the 12th inning. The Orioles had a runner on first base as well as Murray on third. The runner on first distracted the pitcher and Murray stole home. It was great.

The 5/30/25 game was similar in many ways:

The Orioles beat the White Sox 2-1

The winning run was scored on a steal of home by the first baseman

Orioles edge White Sox behind Zach Eflin’s pitching, Ryan Mountcastle’s steal of home
