Jackie Robinson is famous as the first African-American baseball player in the major leagues.
Do you know who was the second? Larry Doby. Unlike Robinson, Doby went right from the Negro Leagues to the major leagues. He was a great player and is in the Hall of Fame.
On July 10th, the House voted to award Doby the Congressional Gold Medal.
The late great Larry Doby is a deserving recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal. He’s a WWII veteran, civil rights pioneer & Hall of Famer who joined Jackie Robinson to break baseball’s color barrier. Let’s celebrate his legacy! pic.twitter.com/x2AzJ50cLb

Doby’s turnaround in 1948, from benchwarmer to catalyst of Cleveland’s last World Series championship club, became one of the most meaningful stories of baseball’s postwar era, @LukeEpplin writes. https://t.co/M8zdwWaR8H

Larry Doby debuted for Cleveland on this day in 1947, becoming the first Black player in the AL. Doby suffered the same indignities as Jackie Robinson, but his struggles have not received the same attention from MLB and the media.

I’ve never felt Larry Doby gets nearly enough credit for being the first Black player in the American League. This week while we’re honoring Jackie, let’s also take some time to remember Larry Doby and his huge contribution to the game. pic.twitter.com/s9Eh0u5PVG

99 years ago today Larry Doby was born in Camden, SC. He grew up in NJ and was a stand out athlete in multiple sports before going pro with the Newark Eagles. Doby was the first Black player in the AL. Bill Veeck signed him to the Indians July 5, 1947. #history #nj pic.twitter.com/zt2pGjIPjW
