Brad Henderson’s Gialli list

Very impressive list. I just started watching Giallo films a few years ago. Independent labels like Arrow have done a fine job of issuing them on Blu-ray.

I would start with his #4, Deep Red. Look for films by Mario Bava, Dario Argento, and Lucio Fulci to start. The Editor is a good homage to the genre.

Muppet Wicker Man

The Wicker Man is a fine 1973 horror film starring Christopher Lee. Thanks to Multiversal+, I found out about a fake Muppet trailer

Killer crocodile and alligator films

I’ve been watching lots of horror films during the pandemic. They just seem appropriate. Here’s a list of 17 crocodile and alligator films. I’ve seen Killer Crocodile and Killer Crocodile 2. They’re sleazy Italian films, kind of mindless fun.

The 2019 film Crawl is much better and is actually a good film. People are trapped in a confined area and try to avoid the killer alligators. It is violent, suspenseful, and has believable special effects.

Update 2/26/22 I recently watched Alligator (1980) a very entertaining film about a giant alligator who kills people. It was written by John Sayles who used his money to finance his own films. Shout Factory just issued a 4k/Blu-ray set.

Divine eats poop in Pink Flamingos

I was reminded about the scene in Pink Flamingos where Divine eats dog poop by this tweet from David Simon.

I live in Baltimore and always enjoy recognizing local places in films. As many responses to the tweet said, there ought to be a plaque there.

Great King Ghidorah/Big Bird fusion

A great combination of King Ghidorah (from Godzilla movies) and Big Bird (from Sesame Street).

I always thought that Ted Nugent should host Sesame Street. It would be sponsored by the letter F. Ted would hunt and kill Big Bird and eat him.

and there’s this:

Gunpowder Milkshake

Gunpowder Milkshake, a new film on Netflix, is good, not great. It’s an extremely violent action film directed by Navot Papushado. Papushado had co-directed two excellent Israel films, Rabies (2010) and Big Bad Wolves (2013). I recommend both, especially Big Bad Wolves.

All three are influenced by Quentin Tarantino who praised Big Bad Wolves. Gunpowder Milkshake is the most Tarantino-like: excessive violence, outstanding music choices, looks great. Bright colors that remind me of Fassbinder’s film Lola. Acting is fine. There’s just no substance to the film. It’s two hours of relatively mindless entertainment. It is fine that the women are empowered and beat the crap out of the men.

Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure was released on this date in 1985. I didn’t watch his TV show or other movies but I enjoyed this one which was Tim Burton’s first feature film.

I learned that the Alamo doesn’t have a basement.

The song Tequila will never be the same.

And now for two tasteless Pee-Wee Herman/Jeffrey Dahmer jokes

Q: What did Jeffrey Dahmer say to Pee-Wee Herman?

A: Don’t play with your food.

Q: What do Jeffrey Dahmer and Pee-Wee Herman have in common?

A: They both whack off body parts.
