John Prine (the album) is 50

This is a great album. Our college radio station was giving away albums and one of my friends took this one because John Denver had covered “Spanish Pipedream”. We didn’t know anything else about it. It’s full of great songs and showcases Prine’s ability to inhabit the lives of a variety of people including women and the elderly. My favorite song here is “Angel from Montgomery”. I have other posts on songs from this album that were covered.

The Band was issued today in 1969

The album simply named The Band was issued on this date in 1969. It’s my second favorite rock album (after Exile on Main Street). In a period of psychedelic excess, The Band’s focus on history and blending styles really stood out. So did their three great vocalists.

There’s a deluxe box set

Elliott Landy took the cover picture. His photos of The Band are here.

20 years of Southern Rock Opera by the Drive-By Truckers

Southern Rock Opera (2001) by the Drive-By Truckers is a great album about the South. Much of the framework is modeled on the Lynyrd Skynyrd story. I first saw them live in 2003 and they were great. This is not my favorite of their albums but it’s one of their best, especially the second disc.

The Kinks and The Who look back

The Paranoid Style is one of my favorite Twitter accounts that I follow. Elizabeth Nelson always has great insights about music.

Elmore James

Elmore James was one of the all-time great blues musicians. He was an incredible guitarist.

Here’s the entry on him at Find a Grave. It has this incredible sentence:

The Elmore James headstone was paid for by Phil Walden of Capricorn Records in 1991 who agreed to do so while under the effects of anesthesia administered by his dentist, who was also the person who sculpted the bronze statue of James that adorns the headstone.

Elmore James and Ike Turner!

Don Everly

Don Everly, the older of the Everly Brothers duo, died on August 21, 2021. The Everly Brothers had hits from the late 1950s into the 1960s and were very influential. Their harmonies are as good as they get.

I am going to post one of their later songs “Gone, Gone, Gone” from 1964 which was covered by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss in 2007. It was the first song on the CD of the Everly Brothers 1983 Reunion concert.

Tom T. Hall

Country singer-songwriter Tom T. Hall died yesterday. “Harper Valley P.T.A” was a big hit for Jeannie C. Riley. The biggest hit of his I recall is “I Love”. The Drive-by Truckers covered
