The Trump campaign should be scrutinized too

This is one of the endless columns on why Harris lost. We need to look at the terrible parts of Trump’s campaign.

Democrats would probably benefit from long-term investment in community organizing. But that’s not “ground game” and it’s not something a campaign can do. http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202…

My comment on the Post website:

There have been lots of critiques of the Harris campaign.  Is anyone going to give comparable scrutiny to the Trump campaign?  Trump won so obviously his campaign deserves some credit. But look how he did it.

In many ways Trump was horrible and I hope we never see another campaign like it.  Here are some reasons:

1) He lied endlessly.  The media failed to keep up but they had an impossible job.   ABC was commended for correcting three lies in the debate while he lied many more times.   How about his lies about hurricane cleanup and eating dogs and cats?  How about his lies about the 2020 election and January 6th?  How about his lies about who pays for tariffs?

2) Trump spewed racism and misogyny.   The way he talked about Harris was disgusting.

3) He was sometimes hours late for events and, to put it kindly, rambling and incoherent.  Remember the 39 minutes when he stood on the stage and didn’t speak?  He still hasn’t reimbursed some communities for the costs of his events.

4) Numerous people who worked for his said he shouldn’t be elected.

I left out that people who worked for him said he had fascist tendencies. He got Republicans to kill the immigration bill that would have helped solve the problem. I also left out that he is a convicted felon and sexual predator. How about his illegal use of Arlington for political purposes?

This is what demographic panic looks like. When people are this uninformed, democracy faces serious headwinds.from @jvl.bsky.social

Important point I learned from this paper – overestimation of the population sizes of minority groups is a more general cognitive error and NOT a domain-specific misperception.

Republicans like the economy – once Trump won

Both sides are partisan but Republicans are more biased. They’re a Trump cult now.

Well, look at this. Republicans suddenly feel the best about this economy since…2020 when Trump was last in office. The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment survey shows the big jump in sentiment for Republicans.Democrats did decline, but back to 2023 levels. No change for Independents

it’s almost like it’s some kind of cult or something

The share of Republicans who say that they’re worse off financially than they were a year ago is already down 15-points since the election.

Trump doesn’t care about his opponents

Fascinated by this Pew finding: "Americans give Trump low marks for his efforts to date to reach out to those who supported Kamala Harris in the election."Question: has Trump done *anything* to reach out to those who supported Kamala Harris in the election? http://www.pewresearch.org/politics/202…

Daniel Drezner (@dandrezner.bsky.social) 2024-11-22T19:25:56.762Z

He’s done nothing to reach out to Harris supporters. I haven’t forgotten how he called opponents vermin and the enemy within during the campaign.

Trump does not have a mandate

Mandate? Trump is now under 50% in the popular vote with his margin ranking 44th out of 51 elections since 1824.4 Democrats won Senate seats in states Trump carried—compared to zero in 16 and 20.GOP poised for its smallest House majority since the U.S. had 50 states.- CNN’s Harry Enten reports

Trump Won Less Than 50 Percent. Why Is Everyone Calling It a Landslide?

Trump won but he still has to lie about it and say he won in a landslide when he actually won less than 50% of the vote and by one of the smallest margins in history

Judd Legum (@juddlegum.bsky.social) 2024-11-28T21:23:23.305Z

He did not win by a massive margin, does not have a historic mandate, and therefore is not automatically owed a cabinet of reactionary extremists and tinfoil-gilded cranks to inflict on the American people.

You can tune out the news on TV

I stopped watching TV news about two years. I have no regrets. I did watch a few things like election night coverage and January 6th hearings. I can’t stand Trump and the media is addicted to him. I get news by reading newspaper sites like the New York Times and Washington Post,.

Tuning out legacy media. Many independent media outlets continue to thrive and have seen a spike in growth.

"I had to take a peek at our competition today. I turned on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox. It was 24/7 bashing of President Biden for pardoning his son Hunter. It was pathetic," writes @meiselasb.bsky.social.

The two Gunning’s crab houses

The Instagram post below reminded me of the two Gunning’s restaurants, both long gone. There was the one in Brooklyn (the southern part of Baltimore). It wasn’t fancy but the crabs were great, Then there was the suburban one that, as a friend said, had the personality of an airport lounge. The food was good, though.
