I lived in Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan until I was 10

Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village is an enormous apartment complex in Manhattan. I lived there from 1953 when I was born until I was 10 in early 1964.

It was unique. One time, we moved within the complex and I changed schools. We had moved from 14th St. to 20th St. I remember seeing John F. Kennedy when he was running for president when he spoke at Stuyvesant Town.

Halloween was an indoor event. You just had to go around on your floor and one or two others and you were good. Did you read the Dick and Jane books in elementary school? My world didn’t resemble theirs. We were not allowed to have a big pet like a dog or a cat. I remember we had a small turtle.

We didn’t have a car for most of the time I lived there. As I recall, my parents were on a waiting list for a space at an outdoor lot. We got the car when we got the space. I went shopping with my father for the 1962 Chevrolet Biscayne which was black with a turquoise interior.

Back then, the apartments were not wired for air conditioning so we had a fan that was three or four foot tall fan.

Trump solicits a bribe from oil executives

He’s not even hiding what he’s doing. Give him $1 billion and he’ll give them tax breaks and other help. Disgraceful.

The decline in walking to work

I walked to work for 35 years. I knew I would always get some exercise every day I went to work. There was a downside of living close to work. When it snowed, I couldn’t say I can’t shovel out my shoes. I also couldn’t say my shoes wouldn’t start.

Republicans lie about their position on abortion

I’m not going to argue with these folks on Twitter. I won’t change their mind and they won’t change mind. The 15 week limit does have some public support. However,

  1. There are17 red states with abortion bans much stricter than 15 weeks. I don’t see how anyone can say that 15 weeks is the Republican position. See the chart linked to below
  2. There is majority support for opposing the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This contradicts the support for 15 week limits.
  3. The bottom line is that the Republican politicians are lying about their abortion positions because they know they are not popular.

Junior Wells by Frederick Brown

This painting of musician Junior Wells by Frederick Brown. It’s at the Smithsonian American Art Museum but is currently not on display. They own five of his works. I’ve seen Stagger Lee and it’s great.

Here’s Brown’s website. He made many paintings of musicians.

The Junior Wells painting was used for an exhibit poster (see my copy below). That’s where I saw the painting.
