Marshall Crenshaw’s “Someday, Someway” was first released as a single by Robert Gordon in 1981. Crenshaw’s version was released as a single in 1982.
Month: April 2021
Covers: California Sun
When I was young, “California Sun” was a hit for the Rivieras in 1964. I had no idea that the original version was by Joe Jones in 1964. The Ramones covered it in their usual brisk, loud style in 1977.
Covers: See You Later, Alligator
My third recent post of songs by Bobby Charles is about “See You Later, Alligator” which was made popular in 1956 by Bill Haley and His Comets. The original version was known as “Later Alligator”. It’s on the excellent (available for streaming but apparently out of print on CD) Chess New Orleans.
The corporate tax rate is too low
Before Trump, it was 35%. He and congressional Republicans cut it to 21%. Now, Biden wants to raise it to 28% which is very reasonable. There is large public support for raising taxes on corporations. Remember, lots of companies use loopholes to pay zero taxes. Look at the charts in the tweets below.
The Magnificent Ambersons – Is there a lost print?
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) was Orson Welles’s second film following his great Citizen Kane (1941). RKO cut it and tacked on a happy ending while Welles was out of the country. There have always been rumors of a full print but it has never been found. It would be great if this effort locates it. The film in its current form is still outstanding and would make my top ten list for American films. Criterion released it on Blu-ray and DVD. TCM also shows it occasionally.
This is a web site about the film and its history.
Republican extremists are raising lots of money
This shows that the extremists are the majority of the party, not the exceptions.
Flushing ashes down the toilet in Captain Fantastic
Captain Fantastic is an excellent 2016 film that includes a scene where cremated ashes are flushed down a toilet in an airport bathroom. The ashes of a woman are flushed by her husband and their sons and daughters.
I am the executor of a will for a friend who lives near Philadelphia and I have teased him that I will flush his ashes at the 30th Street train station. I told him he could pick out the stall.
When we have discussed this, we couldn’t figure out if it was done in a men’s or women’s bathroom. The script is available online but it only says:
143 INT. BATHROOM. SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. DAY. 143
The entire family – Ben, Bo, Rellian, Vespyr and Kielyr,
Zaja, and Nai – are crowded into a small toilet stall.
Ben pulls a paper bag out of his backpack. He opens it wide
enough for the ashes inside to be visible.
Then he pours.
They all stare at Leslie’s ashes in the toilet bowl.
(It’s on page 123 but you can also search for “bathroom”). It doesn’t answer the question of which type of bathroom was used!
Here’s the scene – it’s around the three minute point
Elliott Landy photos of the Band and Bob Dylan
This is an excellent article on Elliott Landy who took the great photos on the covers of Nashville Skyline and The Band. He has a web site.
I have autographed copies of several of his photos.
The Band cover photo was from a Kickstarter campaign for a book he did of photos of them.
The other Band photo was released with the Music From Big Pink deluxe edition.
The black and white photo is from Magnum which released editions on 6″ square prints. I have ordered the Nashville Skyline one.

Covers: The Jealous Kind
Bobby Charles wrote “The Jealous Kind” which is better known by other artists. I like the 1988 Etta James version.
Covers: (I Don’t Know Why) But I Do
“(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do” was written by Bobby Charles and Paul Gayten. The popular version is by Clarence ‘Frogman” Henry. The Bobby Charles version posted below was recorded much later than Henry’s 1961 record.
