Covers: Linda Ronstadt covers Warren Zevon

Linda Ronstadt did a lot to bring Warren Zevon’s songs to a wider audience. Her covers are probably the best known version of some of his songs. His albums were too quirky for mainstream acceptance. I prefer his versions but I am glad she recorded his songs.

This is a list of covers of Zevon songs.

Covers: Play It All Night Long

Warren Zevon’s “Play It All Night Long” was on his 1980 album Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School. There’s a great cover by the Drive-By Truckers which to me is far better than the original. The song is about Lynyrd Skynyrd which makes it a natural for the Truckers since they were often compared to Skynyrd. It’s an avalance of guitars which reminds me more of Neil Young than Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s on an album of leftovers but I saw them play it live so it wasn’t just an afterthought.

I don’t think we need Howard the Duck in 4K

Howard the Duck is a terrible film. There’s no reason for it to be released on 4K. I feel sorry for Cleveland. They don’t get many movies set there but they get Howard the Duck.

Myra Breckenridge might be the worst film I have ever seen. I saw it on a double bill with Candy. Myra made Candy look like Citizen Kane.

I went to several Preakness races

The Preakness is tomorrow (5/15/21) in Baltimore. I went to several of them in the 1970s and 1980s. Thanks to alcohol, I don’t remember too much. I only know which ones I saw if I have tangible proof like a glass or program. I know I saw the last Triple Crown Preakness for over three decades in 1978 because I have the program.

The infield got a lot more crowded and busier in recent years (until the pandemic). They had bands in the infield. There used to be potty races where people ran on top of the portable toilets. Attendance recently was about 50% higher than when I went. Attendance will be limited to 10,000. In 2019, the attendance was 131,256. By comparison, in 1978 it was 81,261.

I have also seen the race from the grandstand which is a lot more adult than watching it from the infield.
