Lincoln Beachey

My father was born in 1908 in Chicago. He frequently talked about seeing famous aviator Lincoln Beechey who died in a plane crash into water in 1915. He remembered the crash. I thought he may have seen it but it took place in San Francisco. Beachey was in Chicago in 1911 and maybe other times.

We didn’t have Google back then so I never checked it out. I had not heard of him. Beachey is a character in the excellent novel Alive In Necropolis by Doug Dorst.

I assume the Trump cult thinks this is good news.

Two former Pittsburgh movie theaters

I remember the Strand movie theater in Pittsburgh – see the third picture in the Instagram post below. I saw The Godfather and several American Film Theatre movies there. I went to the University of Pittsburgh from 1971-1975. It’s right up the street from the theater.

I also remember the Kings Court theater further up Forbes Avenue even closer to Pitt. A friend sent me a picture a few years ago – it was a T- Mobile cell phone store then.

Covers: Instant Karma!

“Instant Karma!” was a John Lennon single from 1970. It was credited to Lennon/Ono with the Plastic Ono Band. U2 covered it in 2007.

The Baseball Hall of Fame opened on 6/12/39

I have been to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown twice – in 1965 and in 1988. If you take children, I recommend waiting until they are old enough that the Hall has memorabilia and plaques for players they remember. In 1965, Ted Williams wasn’t even in the Hall. I had never seen any of these guys play. I enjoyed it much more in 1988.
