The first Tommy John surgery was on September 25, 1974

Young people may not know that the surgery is named after major league pitcher Tommy John who had a fine career before and after the operation. I recommend the 30 for 30 short. John and Dr. Frank Jobe, who did the operation, really didn’t know what would happen when he pitched again.

The Orioles are historically bad

The 15 game losing streak has been tough to watch. They have tied or set all kinds of negative records along the way. They play the Braves now who have won 9 of 10.

There was a gap between 1958 and 1987 in the list of longest Orioles losing streaks. They were good or great for most of that time.
I saw Opening Day – they lost 12-0. That should have been a sign.

Baseball Twitter accounts I follow

I live in Baltimore so some sites are about the Orioles. I will add to this list and try to sort it into categories

Why not Olympic poker?

It’s all about TV ratings. That’s why we have beach volleyball and skateboarding. When do we get Olympic monster trucks?

Steve Stone’s profile for the 1979 World Series

The News-American newspaper ran a special section when the Orioles appeared in the 1979 World Series. Steve Stone had some great notes in the profiles of the players.

As I recall….

One question was about their favorite magazine. Most players said something like Time and Playboy. Stone said Mother Jones.

Another question was about their favorite moment. Most said things like when they were married or their first major league appearance. Stone said it was his divorce.

I saw the 1993 Home Run Derby

The 1993 baseball All-Star Game was held in Baltimore. I didn’t go to the game but I did attend the Home Run Derby the day before. The derby was not as big a deal then as it is now. It was held in the day time.

The things I remember:

  • Juan Gonzalez hit an incredible home run to the third deck in left field. With hindsight, he was probably juiced.
  • Ken Griffey, Jr. hit the warehouse on the fly. This has never been done in a game.
  • Cecil Fielder was accompanied by one of his kids. He looked like a sawed-off version of Fielder. He was very stout. I assume this was Prince Fielder.
I think this photo would have been taken around the time I saw them.

I have two foul balls hit by Orioles players in Home Run Derbies. I bought them online.

I saw the 1988 USA Olympic baseball team

I saw the 1988 USA Olympic baseball team play against the Taiwan national team in Hagerstown. Maryland’s minor league baseball stadium on July 16, 1988. The main thing I remember was that it was 102 degrees. I don’t remember anything about the game. The Taiwan team huddled before the game like a football huddle.

The team won the gold medal and full of future major league players such as Jim Abbott, Ben McDonald., Tino Martinez, Andy Benes, Charles Nagy and Ed Sprague.

The photo is of a collage I assembled with pins, patches, a poster with facsimile autographs and Gateway envelope with real autographs.

It also has my ticket, a flag we were given and a roster sheet I collected autographs on. I remember Ed Sprague spent a lot of time signing autographs.
