Most sports records are broken incrementally by small margins and frequently don’t last long. Bob Beamon‘s long jump at the 1968 Olympics broke the prior record by over 21 inches and lasted almost 23 years. It was an amazing performance.

Sidney Poitier’s first film was No Way Out

No Way Out (1950) is an excellent film that starred Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier who died today. It was Poitier’s film debut. It was released on DVD in 2006 as part of the Fox Film Noir series. It’s an excellent film and not well known today.

I thought it was a scam. I knew someone who had completed the program so several of us went to her final event which was like a graduation. It was a real hard sell – they tried to persuade you that it started working when you gave them money. I was never intending to participate; I was just curious to see what it was. The tweet by Tom Nichols reminded me of it.

Bottle caps were first manufactured in Baltimore

The crown cork bottle cap was first manufactured here in 1892. I first found about this from this Instagram post.

When I grew up in Manhattan, we played skelly, a game with bottle caps with melted crayons in them.
