“You Never Even Called Me by My Name” written by Steve Goodman and John Prine does a great job of skewering country music cliches.
I’ve read some of these. I am especially fond of Jimmy Breslin’s Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game“? about the terrible 1962 Mets. I saw them win one of the 40 games they won that year.

Here’s another song covered by James Brown. The original version of “Prisoner of Love” was recorded in 1931. Brown’s version was released in 1963.
I am not a big fan of ballads but I love James Brown’s version of “Bewildered” from 1959. The original version was by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra from 1938. I also know the cover by Amos Milburn from 1948.
