Carl Hiaasen’s last column

Carl Hiaasen has retired from his job writing columns at the Miami Herald. Here is his final one.

There are books of collections of his columns. He is rightly better known for his humorous crime novels. He always works environmental issues into his books

I have seen him several times read from his books and answer questions. Here are videos of him.

Grover Cleveland’s jaw

While we’re on the subject of the Mutter Museum….

The Mutter Museum has part of Grover Cleveland’s jaw. There’s a picture of it here – scroll down to #2. This article discusses his secret dental surgery.

The rest of Grover Cleveland is at the Princeton Cemetery.

Your mom is your mom until the end

My mother spent the last three months of her life shuttling between a hospital and a rehab center. When she was finally released to go home from the hospital, I went to help her out. She was being wheeled down on a stretcher for her final x-ray and I walked behind her. She turned her head around to me and said “Your shirt could have been ironed.” That wasn’t nice but that was my mother who was always concerned about appearances. At least she still was mentally sound. I wasn’t amused then but I am now. My mother died six days later. I learned that your mom is your mom right up to the end.

Los Lobos – Colossal Head

Colossal Head may be the best Los Lobos album. It’s right up there with How Will the Wolf Survive? Los Lobos is a great live band, too.

I hope some label releases a deluxe version. There was a promo single (see scan below) with three live tracks so maybe there’s a whole recorded concert from then out there. The live tracks were recorded at the Gene Autry Museum and include a cover of “She’s About a Mover” , the 1965 hit by the Sir Douglas Quintet.

20 Best Film Noirs list from the Independent

Writer Graeme Ross prepared this list. I’ve seen 19 of the 20. (I haven’t seen Detour.) Most are available on disc or shown on TCM. I agree with many of his picks but I would put them in a different order. Out of the Past is #1 for me followed by Criss Cross. The Big Sleep is a great film. I saw it recently and was impressed by how well written the script is.

I’m glad he included The Big Heat and The Big Combo. I would rank them both higher than he does.
