Kennedy will determine the future of the Supreme Court

This column is over a year old (and before the Gorsuch appointment) but still makes sense.

From the essay: ” What’s more, a highly conservative first pick by Trump would offer an inauspicious signal for what might come next. The last three Republican presidents have all started with more moderate selections (Sandra Day O’Connor for Reagan, David Souter for President George H.W. Bush and John G. Roberts Jr. for President George W. Bush) and then moved to the right with their second picks (Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, respectively). If Trump begins with a far-right conservative such as Pryor or Gorsuch, what might his second nominee look like? Definitely not like Kennedy.”

I certainly assume Trump would appoint an extreme conservative which will result in Democrats appointing extreme liberals when they get their chance in the future.

Taxpayers should not have to pay for Trump’s political speeches

Trump rarely gives a speech that is not at least partially a campaign speech.  Taxpayers should not have to pay the costs for the speech if he is incapable of sticking to presidential business.

This is a summary of his “infrastructure” speech on March 29th.  He told lies, bashed “fake news”, Hillary Clinton and former President Obama, and even talked about the ratings for “Roseanne”.  I don’t want to pay for this!  He should do this with his own money.

The top cable networks eventually cut away from the speech and they should have.

Trump took advantage of the networks in 2016 and he is still doing it.  Trump is already running for reelection and Democrats should get equal time when he gives a political speech.  Sad!

The latest group of Trump judicial picks

The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved 17 Trump judicial nominees.

They include Thomas Farr from North Carolina, who was opposed by the Congressional Black Caucus and has a long history of white supremacy.

Republican Senator Burr from North Carolina, who supported Farr, had previously blocked the Obama selection of an African-American woman for a judicial appointment.  African-Americans are 27% of the population of the area covered by the court but there had never been an African-American judge in that district.  Sad!
