Jack Kerouac would have been 100 yesterday. I am not that familiar with his books but certainly understand his large influence.
I have included YouTube video of the visit to his grave by Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan in 1975. The manuscript for On the Road, is a long scroll that was purchased by Colts owner Jim Irsay.
Watching an episode of #theipcressfile every night at the moment. Before he became an established author Len Deighton was an illustrator, this is his design for the 1957 first UK edition of the Kerouac classic pic.twitter.com/vlKWhRf0UJ
To celebrate Jack Kerouac’s 100th birthday, our friends at @lithub & our colleagues at @VikingBooks have pulled some archival materials — including correspondence from Malcolm Cowley, internal reader’s reports on THE DHARMA BUMS, & more! #kerouac100https://t.co/gigknddwIh
#OTD in 1957 American writer Jack Kerouac published On the Road.
In three weeks in April 1951, Kerouac typed the manuscript of On the Road onto rolls of architects’ paper, resulting in a 120-foot long manuscript, which we exhibited in the Library in 2012. #Throwbackpic.twitter.com/YPNHh5qJKm
country star zach bryan bought the "on the road" scroll for $12 million at the irsay auction (& apparently previously purchased a church in lowell, kerouac's hometown). simonwarner.substack.com/p/kerouac-sc…
There could be more bills like this from other states. The Supreme Court may overturn or neuter Roe vs. Wade soon.
Missouri State Rep. Brian Seitz's (R) bill would make it illegal to abort nonviable pregnancies that may be life-threatening to the mother. During debate, Seitz makes clear he doesn't know how ectopic pregnancies are treated.
Missouri just put forth a bill that would BAN ABORTION FOR ECTOPIC PREGNANCIES. You read that correctly. It is a clear death sentence for many if not most women who suffer from this complication.
This seems like a good time to remind people that I said SIX MONTHS AGO that using the broken Census, which was biased against black and brown people ON PURPOSE, was a racist idea that Democrats should fight to the last.https://t.co/fNT2OWNDNx
The 2020 Census missed counting Hispanics, Blacks and other minority groups and overcounted Whites and Asians, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. https://t.co/scShwPBA2W
BREAKING: 14 state populations were significantly miscounted in 2020, the Census Bureau said — a revelation that comes after the numbers were already used to divvy up House seats for the next decade.https://t.co/w2fKTPwI2s
I was in a training class in Washington for 11 weeks from April-July 1976. The Metro opened in March 1976. As I recall, the original part was the Red Line from Union Station to Farragut North. They had people taking your money; this was before fare cards. I thought it was great. It was much more modern than the New York subway system which I had used when I lived there until I was 10. I am sad to know that it has had many repair problems. I’ll remember it as new and shiny.
Today in Science History: In 1976 the first 4.6 miles of the Washington Metro (@wmata) opens to the public.

Metro was once “America’s transit system.”
Hopefully, it can be again, former Metro spokesperson Beverly Silverberg writes in a guest opinion. https://t.co/p6Lkw5VBio

The Washington Metro's extension to Dulles is finally nearing completion. (It's taken so long that I was covering it as a local reporter in *2006*). But it probably won't be usable for a while bc the system (hurt by low ridership) doesn't have enough cars.https://t.co/n3s5He4zOz
As everyone is talking about the NBA logo, a reminder that despite the rumors, the MLB logo is probably not Harmon Killebrew. (And maybe it should be changed to Griffey?) https://t.co/s8X9mX8ltf
“Every now and then I tell someone the story about the logo, their eyes go gaga & I say to myself, ‘Hmm, do they really believe me or not?’" MLB logo was designed by Jerry Dior in 1968. Received official credit from MLB for logo, 40 years after the fact. Mr. Dior stressed that… pic.twitter.com/BgWpMjGnpX

Pascault Row is a group of 1891 townhouses about a mile from where I live. I have passed by it many times and it looks great.
I recommend following historichomesofbaltimore on Instagram. I also recommend donating to Baltimore Heritage which does a great job informing us about historic Baltimore architecture.
“Secret Agent Man” was the theme to a TV show and a popular song released by Johnny Rivers in 1966. It began as a demo called “Danger Man” by co-author P. F. Sloan before the name of the show was changed. The first released version of “Secret Agent Man” was by the Challengers.
