Let’s not make a deal

Will foreign countries make deals and treaties with the US after Trump?  He has pulled the US out of the Paris Climate accord and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).  He wants to invalidate the Iranian nuclear agreement and redo Nafta.

Why would anyone make a deal with the US now when the next president can just abandon it?  Trump’s behavior will have bad repercussions for all future presidents. Sad!

Trump is sabotaging the State Department

“Many senior diplomats have found themselves isolated or ignored by the White House. Some have resigned, and others have been pushed out, leading to reports of an “exodus” of senior staff. Those who remain have complained about the poor morale. A proposed 30 percent budget cut, hiring freezes, and the secretary’s slow reorganization of the department have further stoked consternation and fear.”

This article, quoted above, notes that there is now one career ambassador left at the State Department.  There have also been layoffs.  State Department employees have hired lawyers because they are concerned about “political retribution”.  Sad!

The world doesn’t like Trump

Confidence in the US President has fallen from 64% to 22% under Trump.  No confidence has risen from 23% to 74%.  Those figures are from a Pew report in July.

A new Gallup survey shows worldwide approval of US leadership is at a new low of 30%.

Trump’s “America First” posture has isolated the country and created chances for other countries to increase their influence.

“America First” was used as a slogan by a group opposed to US entry into World War II.   The phrase has an anti-Semitic history in addition to its isolationist background.  I’m sure Trump knew the history of the phrase and correctly figured it would appeal to the bigoted part of his base. Sad!

Trump cancels his London visit

Trump canceled his visit to London.  He blamed the cancelation on Obama because he was not a fan of the real estate deal that resulted in the new embassy.  In my view, the real reason is that he was going to be greeted by massive protests.

Liberals and conservatives in the UK criticized Trump at the time.

  • Trump blamed Obama for the embassy move

The decision was made by George W. Bush.  This is just another Trump lie about Obama.

According to the Associated Press, “Then-Ambassador Robert Tuttle said: “We realized that the goal of a modern, secure and environmentally sustainable embassy could best be met by constructing a new facility.””  This article points out other things Trump said about the move which are not correct.   His ambassador to the UK took a different approach.

Former ambassadors also said Trump was incorrect.

Trump continues to alienate allies while he sucks up to Russia.   Sad!
