Today’s House hearing on Hate Crimes and White Nationalism included Republican witnesses who lied about history. Republicans don’t want to deal with white supremacists because they are a large part of the Trump cult.

We really do need to see what the report says before we judge it. Still, it looks like Barr did cover up conclusions damaging to Trump. Congress, not Barr, should have made the obstruction determination (which Mueller really should have made).

Barr is way out of line when he indicated he doesn’t want to release embarrassing material about people not charged with crimes. This sounds like it will protect Trump and his family. Republicans had no qualms about releasing material about Strzok, Page and Hillary Clinton. This is just another Republican double standard.

Democrats should imitate the Republican strategy on judges

A very conservative group called the Federalist Society has prepared a list of candidates that Trump is using to pick judges. This ensures that they will get extreme conservatives – no more picks like Souter who turned out to be more moderate. Since the 1990s, Republicans have emphasized picking young judges which ensures they will serve a long time.

The Democrats should copy this strategy. They should develop an organization to identify liberal judicial candidates. That will make it easier for the next Democratic president. Of course, another key is getting Democratic control of the Senate. I don’t know if a Republican Senate would ever approve a Democratic Supreme Court pick. The Republican strategy of not voting on Garland and picking extreme conservatives (Gorsuch, Kavanaugh) should push the Democrats to create a mirror image for judicial picks – they will pick extremely liberal judges to balance out the Trump picks. Down the road, judges might as well wear red robes or blue robes. There will be no moderates and most decisions will be made along party lines. The Republican strategy has politicized the courts.

I don’t trust Barr

He is not objective. He is a Trump employee. The Mueller report should be reviewed by a bipartisan panel. Otherwise, I won’t believed we’re getting the whole story. I am skeptical about the comprehensiveness of the four page summary. The report is over 300 pages long. Hiding it makes it look like you have something to hide.

The irony is that this may turn out like the Clinton email server. Trump did things that were wrong but not crimes.

If a future Democratic Attorney disagrees with Barr’s conclusion that Trump didn’t obstruct charges, I hope they indict Trump. He will be a private citizen by then.
