Covers: Money (That’s What I Want)

The original version of “Money (That’s What I Want)” from 1959 was Motown’s first hit. I like early Motown records better than the later ones with strings – they are rougher R&B and less mainstream. I’ll take the Marvelettes over the Supremes any day. This song was co-written by Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford and sung by Barrett Strong. Strong is best known as a co-author of many Temptations records rather than as a performer. It’s a great song with a very simple theme – “I need money”.

The Beatles covered it in 1963. This is the best Beatles cover – John Lennon just screams it out. There was an odd cover by the Flying Lizards in 1979 and there are many other versions.

I agree with Chief Justice Roberts on the ACA

I don’t agree with Roberts on much but he’s right on this one.

“I think it’s hard for you to argue that Congress intended the entire act to fall if the mandate was struck down when the same Congress that lowered the penalty to zero did not even try to repeal the rest of the act,” Roberts told the attorney representing Texas, one of the states fighting the law. “I think, frankly, that they wanted the court to do that, but that’s not our job,” Roberts added.

Roberts is right. Republicans are trying to get the court to repeal the ACA (Obamacare) since they failed in dozens of attempts to do it in Congress. It was passed as a law. If it is going to be repealed, it should be done the same way – by Congress.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

The Derek and the Dominos album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” was released 50 years ago today. The source of Clapton’s pain was his love for Pattie Boyd. She was then married to George Harrison but later married Clapton. The rest of the band besides Clapton had been part of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. Duane Allman played slide guitar on most of the album. This is one of the few albums from that era that I like much better now than I did then.

Covers: Who Were You Thinkin’ Of?

“Who Were You Thinkin’ Of?” was recorded in 1979 by by Jim Glaser, one of three authors of the song. Another co-writer is the author Cathie Pelletier who has written excellent novels. I know it best from the cover by Wilco which was originally on a European CD single. The Texas Tornados also covered it; their version is probably the most popular and influential. Check out Flaco Jimenez on accordion.

Winning

Trump’s philosophy is based on winning. That means the other side has to lose. There’s no room for compromise. It’s a toxic philosophy for trying to get along in a multi-party country.

Now he and most of the Republican leaders won’t accept that he lost. It’s fine that Biden thinks he can work with them and he’s welcome to try it but he’s wrong. Republicans only care about winning and will not work with him. That’s why they violate norms over and over with things like the Barrett appointment. It was wrong but it was legal so they did it. They don’t care that it undermines public confidence in the Supreme Court.

Remember when McConnell said his goal was to make Obama a one-term president? Why should this be different? It won’t be. Anything Biden gets done will have to be by executive order. If there is a Supreme Court vacancy, I think McConnell won’t let him fill it.

Republicans don’t care what the public thinks and so far have not suffered from taking unpopular actions.

The public supported hearings on Garland. McConnell didn’t do it.

The public supported having witnesses for the Senate Trump impeachment trial. McConnell didn’t have them.

The public thought the winner of the election should pick RBG’s replacement. Trump and McConnell filled the vacancy anyway.

McConnell won’t even hold hearings on the large volume of bills passed by the House. Why would that change now just because Biden is president.

I admire Biden’s optimism but he’ll learn the hard way. He can’t be president of all of the people when a large minority won’t accept that he is the president.
