Efforts to shut down polling places in Georgia fail

The elections board in majority-black Randolph County, Ga., has rejected a controversial plan to reduce the number of polling places, which many residents feared was an effort to suppress the minority vote https://t.co/QzPx9Onicg

A South Georgia county scrapped plan to shutter polling places, but civil rights advocates say the proposal highlights a widespread problem: https://t.co/2JPcPYO0XT

Let's not celebrate the victory in Georgia too quick. Black officials in #RandolphCounty stopped the mass closing of polling stations, but Kemp told his henchmen to "consolidate" (ie shut down) polling stations statewide in time for his race against Abrams https://t.co/fmlNJ2N6F6

— Greg Palast (@Greg_Palast) August 24, 2018

The plan to close voting sites in Randolph County generated huge outcry. But Georgia officials have closed *214* voting locations across 53 counties since 2012. Predominantly impoverished, African-American, & rural counties.https://t.co/jdrf3sgHuN pic.twitter.com/gpcHRh7pQp

“The bankruptcy of the Republican Party”

They are enabling Trump

Pleasant surprise to see this great op-ed from Tom Mann (author of the excellent book "One Nation After Trump" with @NormOrnstein & @EJDionne) in the @BostonGlobe. It explains how we got here, and how we can get out of this ongoing political crisis.https://t.co/yCSfidnDNb pic.twitter.com/YHXD948aIl

Annul Trump’s presidency?

I wish this was plausible

Impeachment would remedy Trump’s “high crimes and misdemeanors,” but not his unconstitutional presidency. We should also aim for its annulment — his appointments, legislation, rules and executive orders. https://t.co/TUDFqdlZEN

— Robert Reich (@RBReich) August 25, 2018

This “annul the election and its fruits ” idea, which only the ill-informed we’re pushing before @RBReich just embraced it, is a non-starter under today’s legal framework. Despite its intuitive appeal, it’s impractical & wd turn off even many who’d otherwise support impeachment: https://t.co/IRLGZkNQxX

Average household savings

“The top 1% of households have an average of $2.5 million in accounts, while the bottom 20% of households have an average of $8,870 saved.”

Trump was played on North Korea

He said the nuclear threat was over – it isn’t

He gave up military exercises

He did get the return of remains of some American soldiers

Overall, he was used by Kim. Sad!

Guess we’re not going to talk again about a Nobel Prize for Trump anytime soon.

Many South Koreans worry that the U.S. president — though hailed for bringing Kim Jong Un to the table — lacks the patience for a true breakthrough with the North https://t.co/4LR0fCX9xP

— POLITICO (@politico) August 25, 2018

Trump and his acolytes proclaimed the nonsense with North Korea to be a turning point deserving a nobel Prize.

People with the slightest knowledge of Kin Jong Un and arms agreements called it a joke.

Now, the non-deal deal is off. Will Trumpers admit they were wrong? Nope.

. @newshour has learned that the Trump's decision to cancel Pompeo trip re North Korea came as a surprise elsewhere in the administration. At the Pentagon staffers were working on prep for Pompeo trip as POTUS tweeted about cancelling it.

One more time: NFL players are not protesting the national anthem or the military

Trump has warped the discussion

NFL PLAYERS ARE *NOT* PROTESTING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. How many times must it be said? https://t.co/sp7invf35B

— Donté Stallworth (@DonteStallworth) August 25, 2018

Agreed. Lazy, shameful wording conveying exactly the opposite of what Beto so powerfully explains. https://t.co/Xzro7tTlry

Oh, now I see. https://t.co/fSx93huWY2

— Josh Greenman (@joshgreenman) August 25, 2018

So this is what it sounds like when a politician has taken time to consider, assess and understand why NFL players have chosen to protest police brutality. This is what happens when you don’t grandstand, or use NFL players as bait for the intolerant. Some call this leadership. https://t.co/GHHeVmj3oQ

Russians interfered in Brexit vote too

There is little doubt that the Russians tilted the Brexit vote just as they did our presidential contest. But there is a difference: Britian can do a revote. https://t.co/QYmN19uKDv

Great column. The similarities between Trump and Brexit, as well as National Front in France all follow similar pattern – that’s because they are all part of the same Russian effort. https://t.co/jsonWlJlKx

Trump won’t be respectful to McCain even when he is close to death

Trump’s behavior is disgusting.

Immediately after those comments, I asked Trump at a press conference if he wanted to apologize to McCain. Trump said: “No, not at all.” When I asked him he was familiar with what happened to McCain during his captivity, Trump said: “It’s irrelevant.” https://t.co/r8n9psJndB

— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) August 25, 2018

McCain is a much better person than Trump will ever be.

During the height of the 2008 Presidential campaign, John McCain spoke highly of then candidate Barack Obama's character at the Al Smith dinner. On McCain @HardballChris says, "Put that in a time capsule as proof that American political leaders spoke that way of their rivals." pic.twitter.com/8yL0S6Rzmr

— Hardball (@hardball) August 25, 2018

I very much do not agree with the politics of John McCain.

But he defended Obama against racists. He was the deciding vote to save the ACA. He put principle over party and self-interest which in politics is called courage.

He is a good man who has served with dignity.

— Mikel Jollett (@Mikel_Jollett) August 24, 2018

A fine example of the character and integrity of @SenJohnMcCain who put truth before politics and self interest. This is what real leadership looks like. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 https://t.co/5PMJnHusZr

— Frances Townsend (@FranTownsend) August 25, 2018

On Twitter anything positive is demeaned as conferring sainthood it selling out. The man has good points and bad points. Sometimes we can extol someone’s virtues. https://t.co/UEQG0xpKNu

— Glenn Thrush (@GlennThrush) August 25, 2018

I trust that Trump's bitter envy of a far better man gnaws at his soul, such as it is. And I suspect that Trump is made miserable by the inescapable fact that McCain is admired by those whose admiration is worth having, while he is not. https://t.co/Fyli6yqzBt

— Bill Kristol (@BillKristol) August 25, 2018

The low points in John McCain’s public career are real, and shouldn’t be forgotten. (As Todd Purdum points out, McCain himself has been fully aware of them: https://t.co/YuSDk23Ol0 .)

But he also has had moments of extraordinary grace and generosity, for example this: https://t.co/kbRUi7pWrn
