Gerymandering in Maryland

Democrats may gerrymander Maryland so that all eight congressional districts are blue. Not too long ago, there were two red ones and there is one now.

I live in Maryland and oppose gerrymandering. However, I don’t think Democrats have a choice as long as Republicans are gerrymandering and control many more states than Democrats.

I remember the Picturephone

The Picturephone was a big deal at the 1964 World’s Fair which I went to several times. Unfortunately, it never caught on with the public. Of course, now we can use our cell phones and computers as picturephones. The old one looks primitive but it sure seemed futuristic then.

I’m worried about voting rights

Let’s be optimistic. Let’s say that Manchin and Sinema agree to bypass the filibuster and one or more voting rights bills pass and are signed into law by Biden. (I don’t think this will happen but just for sake of discussion, let’s say it does.)

This is what worries me:

Republicans would take this to the courts and it would go all the way to the Supreme Court. The right-wing Supreme Court has already shown they are not interested in voting rights when they gutted the 1965 law. They have said they will not interfere with partisan gerrymandering.

I would expect them to overturn any new voting laws and we’ll be right back where we are today. None of this will change until (if and when) we get a liberal majority on the Supreme Court.

Memories of Radio City Music Hall

I grew up in Manhattan until I was 10 (1953-64). My aunt would take my sister and me to Radio City once or twice a year to see movies and the Rockettes. I saw Disney movies there and know I saw 101 Dalmations when it was new. The last film I saw there was Charade.
