I support the Eagles

Trump’s behavior over the canceled Eagles visit to the White House is a disgrace.
Trump only cares about himself. He pushes the anthem issue because his base likes it. This is all about “winning”, not doing what is right.
Let’s review:
• Trump is a racist. I can give you many examples but the most prominent ones since he became president are calling some bigots in Charlottesville “very fine people” and not criticizing Roseanne Barr’s racist tweets. I’ll never forgive him.  I wouldn’t go to see him.  I support the players.
• No Eagles player kneeled during the 2017 regular season or postseason.
• Fox broadcast photos of Eagles kneeling but it was in prayer before the game. They later apologized
• Trump has a grudge against the NFL because of his USFL failure and not getting the Buffalo franchise.
• No Eagles players stayed in the locker room in 2017.  That was the Pittsburgh Steelers.
• The NFL caved in with their new policy but, with a bully like Trump, it is never enough. Now, he doesn’t want the players to be able to stay in the locker room.
• Trump said kneeling players were SOBs. He recently said that maybe they didn’t belong in the country.   That’s no way to talk about people expressing ideas.
• Trump has lied about the reason for the protests. It’s not against the military, it’s against racial injustice. Shouldn’t we believe the players who protested? They know why they did it. Trump is just trying to avoid discussing racial injustice and appeal to the many bigots who support him.

Here’s a video with a good summary.

Trump canceled the Eagles visit

Trump canceled the Super Bowl Champion Eagles visit to the White House tomorrow because not all players were going to attend.

This is strictly a political move to appeal to his base.

Here are tweets from Eagles player Torrey Smith.

Trump’s statement says “They disagree with their President because he insists they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military…”

That’s not why they disagree.  They don’t want to go because Trump is a racist.  The players were protesting against racial injustice.  It had nothing to do with the military.  Trump disregarded the reason for the protest and warped it into an anti-military protest.  We all support the military.  Unfortunately, Trump got the NFL to cave in. The league didn’t even consult with the players which is certainly wrong.

Public opinion is divided.  Notice the big difference depending on your party affiliation:

Making it an anti-military protest also means that Trump does not have to deal with the real issues raised by the players.  Many of his supporters are racists so they too prefer not to deal with the valid concerns raised by the players.  This is just one more way Trump is dividing the country instead of unifying it.  He only cares about his base.  He won the election but I don’t think of him as my president.  My president is not a liar or a bigot.  My president cares about all Americans.

Trump thinks of everything in terms of winning and losing instead of trying to compromise or see someone else’s point of view.  This article discussed what he told Cowboys owner Jerry Jones:  ““This is a very winning, strong issue for me,” the President told Jones, according to Andrew Beaton of the Wall Street Journal. “Tell everybody, you can’t win this one. This one lifts me.””

Trump supporters will say that players went to see Obama even if they disagreed with him.  However, there’s a difference.  Trump is a bigot and Obama is not.  It’s not just disagreeing on political issues like taxes.  This is much more important and fundamental. I would not want my picture taken with a racist and I wouldn’t go to see Trump.

from the mayor of Philadelphia:

Here’s an excellent column by a former NFL player critical of the NFL policy.

Here are some good tweets on the new NFL policy:

It’s always about Trump

Trump did not condemn Roseanne Barr’s racists tweets.  Instead, he used it as an opportunity to make the issue about himself and demand apologies.

Trump is a racist as he has shown repeatedly so it’s not surprising he didn’t disagree with Barr’s tweets.   He has no interest in uniting the country.  He only cares about his base.

Not all Trump supporters are bigots but I think a lot of them are.  He didn’t attack Barr’s remarks so he wouldn’t offend them.  I don’t blame Trump for Barr’s tweets but he has created an environment where bigots are more open because of his encouragement.

Sad!

White racial resentment is the real reason for welfare cuts

This is an excellent article on white racial resentment and it’s impact on views of the safety net.

It states: “White Americans are more likely to favor welfare cuts when they believe that their status is threatened and that minorities are the main beneficiaries of safety net programs, the study says.

The findings suggest that political efforts to cut welfare programs are driven less by conservative principles than by racial anxiety, the authors conclude.”

Sad!

Good for ABC for canceling Roseanne

Congratulations to ABC for putting values over money when they cancelled “Roseanne” because of the star’s disgusting tweets.  Maybe Fox News will pick the show up.

Here’s an overview of what happened.

Roseanne had apologized and said it was a joke.  It wasn’t a joke.  Saying it was a joke is the strategy Trump uses when he says especially repulsive things.

Great tweet on Jack Johnson

=3-2=

This tweet makes a great point.  Trump pardoned the late Jack Johnson but objects to protests by current Black athletes.

Background on why Obama didn’t pardon Johnson:
