Republican tax scam

The Republican tax cuts that primarily benefit rich people and corporations are unpopular.   This NBC-Wall Street Journal poll shows that 27% think it’s a good idea while 36% think it’s a bad idea.

“Moreover, a majority gives thumbs-down on the plan when asked to consider its potential effects. Just 39 percent foresee a positive impact from a stronger economy, more jobs and more money in their pockets; 53 percent foresee a negative impact from higher deficits and disproportionate benefits for the wealthy and big corporations.”

Sad!

Speaking of mug shots…

There are lots of great mug shots online of ordinary people who did bizarre things, had crazy expressions or wore inappropriate shirts.  This is my all-time favorite:

It’s here and other places. Would you really want to wear this shirt when you were before a judge?

Trump’s “best people”

Here’s a roundup of articles on current and potential Trump appointees.  Some have disturbing views while others have character issues.

An opponent of the Endangered Species Act is picked to oversee the Department of Interior’s wildlife policy.

A Defense Department appointee resigned after it was shown he was a birther.

Trump’s pick to head an organization that coordinates assistance to migrants made anti-Muslim tweets.

A Fox News commentator who had considered to head the VA had infidelity and nepotism issues.

“The Trump administration’s abrupt cancellation of a federal program to prevent teen pregnancy last year was directed by political appointees over the objections of career experts in the Department of Health and Human Services.”

Trump’s personal aide lost his job over his gambling habit which was considered a security risk.

Would concealed carry supporters apply the same philosophy to marijuana?

Some conservatives are all for states rights…except when they’re not. The concealed carry bill passed by the House of Representatives would allow people from states which allow people to carry a concealed weapon to also carry it in states that don’t permit this. This is a bad idea.

I wonder if they would apply the same rules to marijuana. If you were from a state where pot is legal, you could smoke it anywhere. I bet they don’t want that so they would defend the state marijuana laws.

Note: the article I linked to was written before the Florida mass shooting but I doubt concealed carry supporters have changed their minds. In fact, Trump wants concealed carry in schools for trained people.

The right-wing media’s invalid defense of Pruitt’s travel costs

The right-wing media is making invalid comparisons to Obama Administration costs.

“Pruitt said that Obama’s EPA heads spent almost ten times as much as he did on international travel—his $120,000 compared with their $1 million. To start, Pruitt’s 2017 international travel costs are actually $160,000. (He declined to include a $40,000 trip to Morocco, perhaps because it’s under investigation for potential impropriety by the EPA inspector general.) Next, the $1 million figure he cites represents 14 trips Obama’s EPA heads took over a period of eight years, compared with two international trips Pruitt took in one year. Correlating $160,000 to $1 million is thus a plainly false comparison.”
